Yash Raj’s New York releasing amidst peak of IPL season
Yash Raj Films is releasing their first film of 2009 - New York amidst the peak of IPL's season 2. But then again the release day is also subject to the differences being resolved between film producers, distributors and exhibitors.
One can recall, Yash Raj doing the same last year during IPL's season 1 by releasing their mega starrer Tashan in last week of April and falling flat on its face. One now has to see what is in store for their first release of 2009 which is not a regular typical Yash Raj entertainer but a hard hitting one. The film is a contemporary story of friendship set against the larger than life backdrop of a city often described as the centre of the world. For most of us, larger events in the world are just headlines in the newspapers but these events can change our lives... forever. The film is one such story of 3 young friends whose beautiful lives are turned upside down by larger events beyond their control.
Written and Directed by Kabul Express fame Kabir Khan and Produced by Aditya Chopra, the film stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan. The trailer of the movie first released in theatres along with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and created quiet a buzz. Though its promotions began, they were suddenly stopped in between leading to speculation that film has been postponed for June 2009 release. -Sampurn Media

Women of the year
Katrina Kaif: In 2008, the siren delivered five hits back-to-back. With 11 brands in her kitty, Kat is leading other tinselville ladies in the endorsement space. Currently the most bankable star, she has seven films coming up this year.

Twinkle Khanna: A successful entrepreneur and interior designer, Tina entered the first ladies’ club after her hubby, Akshay Kumar, became the box-office king. She also has several films to her credit.
Freida Pinto: She is the latest red carpet darling and has found admirers in Scarlet Johansson and Kate Winslet. She will next be seen with Robert De Niro in a Woody Allen film.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: India’s most bankable star, she’s on the Forbes’ list and a Padmashree awardee. Ash also won rave reviews for her negative act in Pink Panther2.
Kiran Rao: She is directing India’s first Gorilla film, titled Dhobhi Ghaat. The film is shot with a limited crew of 13
members. She is said to be Aamir Khan’s guiding light.
Zoya Akhtar: In her debut film Luck By Chance, she directed everyone — from Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan to Rishi Kapoor. New York Times and Variety have appreciated her work.
Ashwini Yardi: The programming head at Colors channel is the hottest name in the TV industry right now. Her innovative and bold programs won the channel the highest TRPs.
Kareena Kapoor: Tinseltown knows her as a go-getter. In 2008, Bebo ruled headlines for her saucy size-zero avatar... and pretty much everything else she did!
Neeta Lulla: Designer for films like Jodhaa Akbar and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, her client list boasts of regulars like Ash, Hrithik Roshan, Gauri Khan, and Kajol, among others.
Katrina Kaif to tread a different path
Despite a setback in the form of Subhash Ghai's YUVVRAAJ, Katrina Kaif is the numero-uno actress of Bollywood, both from the audience as well as the latest newspaper poll. Last year was a pretty good one for Katrina with one super-hit, SINGH IS KINNG, one hit RACE and a flop in YUVRAAJ. HELLO too scraped through to safety, although Katrina's role was a very short guest appearance. However, a look at the list of films that Katrina has up her sleeves in 2009, it appears that she is going to retain her number one spot. Coming up in May will be Yash Raj's NEW YORK, where she will seen sharing screen space with John Abraham, Irrfan Khan and Neil Mukesh. Then there is Prakash Jha's political thriller RAJNITI, where she will sport a totally de-glam look. It will be followed by Shree Ashtavinayak's action-thriller, BLUE, with her favourite and lucky co-star, Akshay Kumar along with Sanjay Dutt and Lara Dutta. Another film that she is looking forward to is Priyadarshan's DE DHANA DAN, once again with Akshay and the cast of HERA PHERI. And then there is PARTY and RAVE, both of which are (reportedly) in pre-production
While taking a look at the films mentioned above we see that there is a variety in the roles that Katrina has chosen. All her characters are very different from the earlier glam doll, dumb belle image (apart from a NAMASTEY LONDON). Her roles are full of substance and will give her ample scope to showcase her acting prowess and help her cement her place on top of the ladder.
